The second Anglian Open Team League was held at Breckland Leisure Centre, Thetford.
The league had increased since last year from just one division of Men’s teams to a first division of six and a second division of 4. We also had a division of 5 Women’s teams. Still a far cry from the massive and affluent leagues running across the channel.
Premiair Solutions had kindly donated prize money to the respective champions but this was not a factor in the increased entry as this was not made public.
Ryecroft took the Men’s First Division championships edging Kin Ryu by just three points having beaten them in the first match of the day 3-2 so close was the margin. Kumo took the third spot and the bronze medals.
In the Men’s Second division, Black Dog won all their fixtures by the narrowest of margins 3-2 to secure the title and promotion to Division One next year.
The real drama of the day was left to the ladies as Comberton B and Kin Ryu finished level on 9 points, equal of fights won and lost and level on contest points scored. Under the rules in such a tie, a weight band was drawn out of a ‘hat’ and two ladies had to fight a sudden death fight. Comberton B prevailed to take the title and the prize money.
We are striving to increase the League to four men’s divisions and two ladies divisions as we bid to provide tiered development for adult judo.

Next years Team League event will be held in May and the progress depends on the clubs supporting this effort. Together we can make it work and give players of all abilities an opportunity to represent their clubs in Great Britain.
